Artist’s Statement
I received a BFA degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and an MFA degree from Pratt Institute, NY on a full-tuition grant for graduate study.
I was an art instructor at Orange County Community College in Middletown, NY and at the Brooklyn Friends School. I created and directed a rural ceramic workshop in upstate NY and taught wheel thrown and hand built ceramics to children and adults.
After moving to Florida, I taught at the Miami Art Center and then became Supervisor of the North Miami Branch of the Metropolitan Museum.
Moving to Boston, I worked as secretary to the Director of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art and during that time launched two enterprises - Kidquilts and Capability, creating colorful hand painted quilts for children and hand-sewn woolen capes. They were sold in several Boston boutiques.
In western Massachusetts, I worked with a designer for an apparel firm and produced line lists and fashion graphics on a CAD system. At that time I renovated my old barn into a beautiful studio in Falls Village, CT and taught private classes in Pottery, Drawing, Painting and Fabric Printing to children and adults. For eight years, I coordinated with the Sharon, CT Teen Center to produce the Sharon On The Green Arts and Crafts Fair, an annual event featuring over 150 artists and artisans.
Prior to moving to Wilmington, I worked in a lighting showroom in western Massachusetts as a lighting specialist and consultant. Presently, I work part time at the Home Depot in Lighting/Electrical. I also teach art classes locally and list them monthly in the Creative Wilmington calendar.
I have written over twelve courses of art study for my website- //www.free-online-art-classes.com
including lessons in Acrylic Painting, Oil Painting, Collage, Oil Pastels, Colored Pencil, Conte Crayon, Drawing and Finding the Artist Within. To date, I've had over 1200 global students access my courses and I've enjoyed helping them on their artistic journeys.
I have produced over 25 art demonstration videos on a variety of subjects, including How To Make A Pinch Pot, How To Make A Clothes Horse, Draw A Flower With Pencil, Paint A Water Color Landscape, and many more. They are on my YouTube channel - Swirloflight.
My most recent art work can be seen at Le Soleil Gallery in Carolina Beach.
