Featuring vintage surfboards from local shapers, t-shirts, posters, photographs, newspaper clippings, and related surf ephemera, the exhibit chronicles the region's surf history from the early 1960s to the present and celebrates a colorful cast of individuals who transformed surfing from a small countercultural phenomenon into a diverse increasingly mainstream sport. Located in the library's Special Collections gallery on the second floor of Randall Library, the exhibit runs from February 1 through November 30, 2008 and is open to the public. During this time, there will be various events held in conjunction with the exhibit so check this site periodically for more information. His work of the early 1960's had a great impact at the time, forecasting contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst (carcasses in formaldahyde) and Han Hyo-Seok's disturbing photographs of faces and bodies of raw meat. | Primal Forces - Exhibition of Janette Hopper | 04-28-2008 through 06-07-2008 |
Primal Forces A SOLO EXHIBTIION FEATURING NEW WORK FROM JANETTE HOPPER FIGURES AND LANDSCAPES IN A VARIETY OF MEDIUMS On display April 28 – June 7 with an opening reception on May 23rd at 7pm with live music from Karma and Gabriel Mortali as well as the traditional reception fare. Like Pissarro and Cézanne before her, Janette Hopper rejects the classical research of an ideal of beauty and an eternal essence of things, and postulates instead as predominant the real vision compared to any learned conventional theory. The work that results from this vision is the most conspicuous characteristic of Impressionism and Hopper effectively, accurately and objectively records visual reality in terms of transient effects of light and color. Her astute search of sites protected from industrialization translates to the canvas with a fiery dedication to preserve her environment and to depict this form and volume from a mass of colored brushworks. Janette Hopper currently is a Professor and the Art Department Chair at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Her work has been shown extensively in major museums, at colleges and universities and in private galleries. Solo museum exhibits in the U.S. include the Bellamy House Mansion, Frye Art Museum, the Maryhill Museum of Art, and the Nordic Heritage Museum. The Washington and Oregon State Arts Commission, the City of Mannheim in Germany and the Marselisborg Gymnaseum in Denmark are among those who have purchased works for collections. During her Fulbright in Denmark in 1991-92, she began to have European one-person exhibits starting in Copenhagen with a grant from Danish Fulbright. She has continued through the present, exhibiting in art centers and galleries in Denmark as a member of Paleur International, and independently in Germany, and France. Her Pyrenees series of landscapes were shown in Bordeaux, France. Her landscape paintings were included in a Fulbright juried retrospective in Washington, DC and with New York artists in the Lincoln Center and in many other juried exhibitions. On Sabbatical Leave, she painted and exhibited the Neckar River Series in Germany. In 2004, she presented her work at Monash University in Prato, Tuscany, Italy. In 2005, she had a one person exhibit in Ludwigsburg, Germany. She is always making new artwork in her home studio. Artist Statement: “My creative impulses center on environmental ethics and primal memories. The figures are universal and global as are my concerns for our relationships with each other and with our universe. Questions are asked in the images, which arouse anger, joy, indifference and passion as experienced by the figures. The outcome is organic not consciously determined. Interaction and balance are sought by the figures and in the compositions. In North Carolina, I have found an instant heartfelt affinity with the sky, water, and luxuriant growth of our beautiful state. Inspired by our landscape from ocean dunes to cotton fields to waterways to mountains, it‘s the space, light and color that moves me. Even though I am often on location painting and sketching rapidly, I find the changes happen so quickly that I must paint from my memory of the relationships that already don’t exist and try not to be too distracted by the new possibilities that develop that I also find incredible. Gesture and movement and mark-making contribute to my goal which is to establish a personal expression in a variety of media. These opposing forces speak about my relationship to nature. Through art, I explore the incongruity in nature and within us.” Dates of this exhibit are April 29th – June 7th, 2008 An opening reception with an artist meet/greet will be held on Fourth Friday Gallery Night on Friday May 23rd from 7 – 10pm and will feature live music from Karma and Gabriel Mortali along with hors d'oeuvres and the traditional gallery fare. | |
