Featuring vintage surfboards from local shapers, t-shirts, posters, photographs, newspaper clippings, and related surf ephemera, the exhibit chronicles the region's surf history from the early 1960s to the present and celebrates a colorful cast of individuals who transformed surfing from a small countercultural phenomenon into a diverse increasingly mainstream sport. Located in the library's Special Collections gallery on the second floor of Randall Library, the exhibit runs from February 1 through November 30, 2008 and is open to the public. During this time, there will be various events held in conjunction with the exhibit so check this site periodically for more information. | Bronze and Oil | 06-20-2008 through 07-11-2008 |
Walls Fine Art Gallery Larry Moore, Robert Isley, Bill Ludwig June 18 through July 11 Bill Ludwig was a med student, way back when. One anatomy project turned his head to sculpture and he never looked back. His pieces are each one of a kind – there are no editions. Uniqueness in bronze is almost unheard of because of the expense and complexity of the bronze casting process. Bill is able to produce such rarities because he has his own foundry. Now in his 70’s, Bill has hired an extra pair of hands and a strong back to help pour the molten bronze. His work is nearly all figurative with a surrealist overtone that leads viewers to build their own various stories around each piece, much to Bill’s delight. Larry Moore is best known for his award-winning illustrations of opera, most of which are pastels. All the while his “job” had him considering the plots and characters of the Barber of Seville and Rigoletto, Larry’s recreation took the form of painting – recording the changing landscape around his native Cocoa Beach. Eventually illustration began to take a backseat to painting, and those awards started rolling in, too. Larry’s painting is moving in a direction that merges the story-telling quality of his opera work with the landscape that he loves. Robert Isley records snippets of daily life, glimpses of streets and buildings in an 8”x10” format. Architecture really draws him more than pure landscape. Cars and leaning light poles people his paintings as the light that belongs to either day or night colors the image and casts shadows that serve Robert’s composition. The brushwork is selective and leans toward loose, but his drawing is impeccable without ever being stiff. There’s a bit of Edward Hopper here but only in the selection of subject. The feel of Robert’s paintings is far from the loneliness of Hopper; they are full of a hopeful contentment. For more information call Nancy or David at 910-343-1703, visit www.wallsgallery.com, or stop by the gallery on Wrightsville Avenue at the top of Dawson Street Gallery hours are 10-6, Wed - Sat

Joanie Kennedy draws on the vanishing scenes that make this coast unique in her sparkling acrylic paintings. | "Dog Days of Summer" @ ArtSource Five Points | 07-01-2008 through 08-01-2008 |
Animal lovers take note! This July, ArtSource Five Points hosts "Dog Days of Summer," an animal-themed art show dedicated to our beloved animal companions. Select gallery artists including Rebecca Rousseau, Clinton Duncan and others have rendered depictions of man's best friend in a variety of different styles and mediums. Abstracted pooches, impressionistic hounds, and realistic felines abound! By hosting "Dog Days of Summer," ArtSource is trying to raise awareness of the needs of the SPCA of Wake County and the plight of unwanted animals during the SPCA’s busiest time of year. According to the SPCA of Wake County, the summer months are nicknamed "puppy and kitten season" because the shelters are overrun with litters of unwanted animals. ArtSource is helping to combat this epidemic by donating a minimum of 5% of the proceeds from the "Dog Days of Summer" exhibition to the SPCA of Wake County to help with the opening of their new spay/neuter clinic, which opens mid-August 2008. The new clinic is modeled after the Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic in Asheville, NC. It is a national model with the mission of providing targeted, high-volume, high-quality, low-cost sterilization services. Come out and celebrate amazing animals during "Dog Days of Summer" at ArtSource Five Points and help to support a good cause. In short, ArtSource has literally gone to the dogs. | HORIZONS - EXHIBIT AT FOUNTAINSIDE GALLERY | 07-12-2008 through 07-31-2008 |
"HORIZONS" BY PAULA HOLTZCLAW OPENS AT FOUNTAINSIDE GALLERY A new exhibit of marine and marsh landscapes by Waxhaw, North Carolina artist Paula Holtzclaw, opens July 12-31 with a reception for the artist, 6-8 pm. This is the third solo show for Holtzclaw whose exhibit last summer sold out. The title “Horizons” was derived from the vastness, scale and horizon lines of the artist’s favorite subject, the wetlands of the coastal low country. Her depictions of it’s beauty untouched by man show her inspired and studied approach and her concern that these last wild places may soon vanish. While seeking out the uncompromised land, Holtzclaw has spent the last decade carefully developing her distinct style of realism. Paula’s love of art began at an early age; that love was passed on to her by her grandmothers, both of whom were artists. After time spent raising her twin sons, the artist returned to her original passion for painting. After her over twenty year career in the medical field ended, she once again had the creative time necessary to become the professional painter she had dreamed of being. As she says, “The desire and need to paint is a deep inner calling and cannot be denied” Holtzclaw’s compositions are large in scale and format, monumental even when the physical size is reduced, thus allowing her to visually record her uniquely detailed observations of nature. These highly personal renderings pay homage to nature’s duality of beauty and power, yet depict the natural world’s vulnerability to human intervention. When that human presence is allowed into the painting, it is in the form of only a reminder, such as a boat or piling, a footnote that has come and gone while nature remains. Far horizons and infinite skies are the hallmark of Paula Holtzclaw’s art. Poetry of place is a vital element in the artist’s choice of subjects and as she describes her work, “My goal as an artist is to create paintings which allow me to share with the viewer the special feeling of peace and tranquility I experience when painting, a place perhaps that they have visited and made memories of their own”. Paula Holtzclaw’s paintings are included in private and corporate collections throughout the country. Her work has been displayed in museum and national juried exhibitions, including the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society’s “Best of America 2007”, the AAWA and ASMA exhibitions. She recently received an Award of Merit at the American Women Artists 8th Annual National Juried exhibition and was a semi-finalist in the American Artists Magazine’s 70th Anniversary Competition. Her work has been featured in publications including Southwest Art, American Artist Online, The Charlotte Observer and Charlotte Place Magazine. “Horizons” will continue through the month of July. Fountainside Gallery is located in Lumina Station, 1900 Eastwood Road, Ste. 44 in Wilmington, NC. Further information can be obtained by calling the gallery at 910.256.9956 or by emailing the gallery at info@fountainsidegallery.com . “Horizons” can also be viewed online at www.fountainsidegallery.com
